Carmen Lawrence

First Female Premier of an Australian State · Western Australia, 1990

Portrait of Carmen Lawrence, painted in Galaxy Pink

Lawrence became the first woman to lead a state government, serving as Premier of Western Australia.

Later she served in federal politics as a minister and eventually as president of the Australian Labor Party. Becoming the first female Premier was a watershed that shattered the political status quo.

Galaxy Pink reveals its supergranulating power across the textured ground.

The deepest magenta tones sink into the creased ridges of her collar, hair and eyeglasses, creating sharp structural definition. As the paint washes into the peripheral bursts — particularly at upper right — it unbinds into an explosive constellation of fine particles and atmospheric pink mist.

Intense focus in the eyes and features for intellectual resolve; uninhibited cosmic blooms for the shockwaves of the achievement. A journey that broke open uncharted territory and reshaped what state leadership could look like.

Look closely

Look at the surface.

Deep magenta sinks into the collar, hair and eyeglass frames. In the upper-right burst the pigment unbinds into a web-like constellation of particles — like light across a nebula. What happens to the pigment where the tissue paper rises?
